Profile of a Young Author: Amari
When young Amari decided to be a paleontologist, he didn’t see a lot of kids who looked like him in dino books. So he and his mom wrote their own!
PLAYGROUND is one of those magazines I picked up at an indoor playground when I first moved to Orlando in 2015. It gave a vibrant, glossy sense of my new city and how I might find adventure within it.
So when we moved back to Orlando after I spent a year writing for a living again, I placed PLAYGROUND at the top of my list for dream local publications. One day my writer friend Kirsten Harrington, who had freelanced for me in Beijing, wrote an introductory email to the editors at PLAYGROUND to introduce me.
They assigned me their Amazing Kids! profile, and first up was Amari Cooper Ferguson, a fantastic young kid who wants to be a paleontologist but was upset to find no kids in books that looked like him. Please enjoy!
